National Theatre to unveil five-year strategic plan on April 7

The National Theatre of Ghana has announced it will launch its new five-year strategic plan on April 7, an initiative its leadership says will transform the institution into the nation’s premier hub for creative development.

The plan was revealed during a stakeholder engagement at the Theatre on Tuesday, March 24, which brought together key players from the creative industry to discuss the vision for growth, sustainability, and renewed cultural relevance.

Henry Herbert Malm, the Acting Director of the National Theatre, stated that the document aims to move the institution beyond its perception as merely an event venue toward a more impactful role in nurturing talent and driving the creative economy.

“We recognise that for some time, the Theatre has largely been seen as a space for hiring and events. This strategic plan is about redefining that narrative and restoring the National Theatre to its core mandate as a centre for creative development and cultural expression,” Mr. Malm said.

He explained that the plan prioritises strengthening the Theatre’s resident companies, expanding programming, and creating more opportunities for practitioners in theatre, dance, and music. It also focuses on audience development through digital innovation and targeted outreach to younger demographics.

“We are looking at how to build a loyal audience base while also leveraging digital platforms to extend our reach beyond the physical space. The future of the arts is not just on stage; it is also online and across multiple platforms,” he added.

The Executive Director also revealed plans to establish structured training programmes, including a National Theatre Academy and youth camps, to help groom the next generation of creatives.

Board Chairperson, Madam Amarteorkor Amarteifio, described the plan as a critical tool for accountability and long-term growth, assuring stakeholders that it would serve as a working framework rather than a document left on a shelf.

“We cannot do this alone. The success of this strategic plan will depend on partnerships and a shared commitment to developing the creative arts sector. The Theatre belongs to all of us, and we must all play a role in its growth,” she said.

The April 7 launch follows a series of consultations aimed at addressing key challenges, including funding constraints and the need for clearer programming direction.
