Survey reveals why Ghanaian youth are shunning condoms: size and comfort cited

A new survey has shed light on a concerning trend in Ghana’s public health landscape, revealing that many young people are avoiding condom use due to issues with size and comfort.

According to Isaac Amoah, Founder of the Ikederab Medical Outreach, data from a recent survey indicates that the condoms currently available on the Ghanaian market are perceived as too small and excessively tight, leading to significant discomfort among users.

“Our new survey suggests that condoms available in Ghana are too small and very tight, so many youth in the country avoid using them because they don’t feel comfortable,” Mr. Amoah disclosed during a free HIV screening exercise.

The revelation comes as a stark warning to health officials. Mr. Amoah emphasized that at least 15,000 people are infected with HIV in Ghana every year. He used the platform to appeal directly to the youth, urging them to prioritize their health and use condoms consistently to protect themselves against HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

The findings highlight a critical gap between public health messaging and the practical realities of available preventive resources. Health advocates are now calling for a review of the types of condoms distributed and sold in the country to ensure they meet the needs of the population, thereby encouraging consistent usage.
