Tetteh Quarshie Interchange: Roads Minister inspects key milestone in motorway expansion project

Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza has expressed satisfaction with the progress of work on the Accra–Tema Motorway Expansion Project, following a site visit to witness the successful launching of massive concrete beams at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange.

The minister’s visit on Sunday, March 15, comes as contractors undertake critical bridge construction works that require temporary closures of portions of the road.

According to the Ghana Highway Authority, northbound traffic from Accra to Madina will be temporarily halted during the launching of T-beams, with each closure expected to last between two and four hours. The traffic management plan took effect on Saturday, March 14, and will be implemented on weekends and public holidays over the next four months.

To minimize disruption, the southbound carriageway from Madina to Accra will be reconfigured from four lanes to allow two lanes in each direction, facilitating two-way traffic flow during the operation.

In a Facebook post following his inspection, Mr Agbodza provided an update on the engineering feat, noting that workers had safely launched three of the 140-tonne concrete beams on Saturday.

“Earlier this morning, I joined a team of engineers launching the 140-tonne concrete beams at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange as part of the Accra–Tema Motorway project,” the minister wrote.

“I am happy to report that they launched three beams yesterday safely. God willing, they may launch another three today.”

Mr Agbodza also acknowledged the cooperation of the motoring public, praising their patience as they navigated the work zones.

“I am happy to say traffic management around the works area has been ok. I want to thank the motoring public for their patience in driving through the area. Together, we shall improve our road infrastructure, increase productivity and create sustainable jobs,” he said.

The beam-launching operation marks a significant milestone in the broader Accra–Tema Motorway Expansion Project, which aims to upgrade and expand one of Ghana’s most critical transport corridors linking the capital to the country’s primary industrial port city.
