Evangelist Nana Agradaa’s 15-year sentence reduced to 12 months on appeal

The Amasaman High Court has significantly reduced the prison sentence of controversial celebrity evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, widely known as Nana Agradaa or Mama Pat, from 15 years to 12 months.

The ruling was delivered today, Thursday, February 5, 2026, following an appeal filed by Agradaa challenging her initial sentence. The court partly upheld her appeal, finding her original punishment to be excessively harsh.

Agradaa was also fined GH¢2,400.

Background of the Case

The evangelist was originally convicted and sentenced by the Accra Circuit Court in 2023 on charges related to a 2022 televised broadcast. During the broadcast, she promised to distribute GH¢300,000 to the needy at a church service. However, prosecutors proved that she instead solicited and received various sums of money from members of the public without fulfilling her promise.

This led to her conviction on two counts of defrauding by false pretence, for which she received 15-year sentences on each count, to be served concurrently, and an additional fine for charlatanic advertisement.

The Appeal

In her appeal, Agradaa’s legal team argued that she was denied a fair trial and that the 15-year sentence was disproportionate to the offences. The High Court, while not overturning the conviction, agreed that the initial sentence was severe and warranted a reduction.

The new sentence of 12 months imprisonment, coupled with the GH¢2,400 fine, replaces the previous judgment.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to Agradaa’s prominent profile as a former traditional priestess who transitioned to evangelical ministry, often remaining a polarizing figure in the media.
