President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku as the inaugural Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, a newly established body created to overhaul funding for sports development in the country.
Dr Wuaku, a banking and finance expert with over 30 years of experience, takes charge of an initiative that stakeholders believe will finally tackle the chronic underfunding that has hampered Ghana’s sports sector for decades.
The appointment signals a deliberate shift from the traditional reliance on limited government allocations and occasional private donations that have long characterised sports financing in Ghana. Despite regular budgetary provisions from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, these funds have often proved insufficient, leaving major infrastructure projects stalled and talent development programmes under-resourced.
The Ghana Sports Fund Bill, 2025, explicitly acknowledges that the previous ad hoc funding model has constrained Ghana’s ability to harness the full potential of its sporting talent and infrastructure.
Dr Wuaku’s extensive background in financial management is expected to bring professional rigor and innovative strategies to the Fund, ensuring more sustainable and impactful investment in sports at all levels.
Sports administrators, athletes, and analysts have welcomed the move, describing it as a pivotal moment that could elevate Ghana’s competitiveness on the continental and global stage.
