Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has commissioned 100 new 29-seater buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL), marking the first phase of a government initiative to procure 300 vehicles aimed at revitalising public transport across Ghana.
The ceremony took place on Friday, May 22, 2026, at the MMTL headquarters in Accra.
Speaking at the event, the Vice President said the buses have been designed with passenger safety, comfort and fuel efficiency as core standards. She noted that deployment would focus on night operations, shift workers and late-night economic activity in urban areas.
“This initiative aligns closely with His Excellency’s RESET agenda, which seeks to improve infrastructure, create jobs, stimulate economic activity and deliver practical solutions to problems,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said.
She added that routes would be planned using demand data and commuter feedback, and that safety remained a priority.
The Vice President urged MMTL management to complement the investment with strong operational discipline, including efficient scheduling, professional driving practices and strict maintenance routines.
“When our transport system is efficient, people, goods and services move as they should. That is why enhancing public transport is central to our economy,” she said.
Background
The commissioning forms part of the government’s response to long-standing transport challenges in major urban centres, where commuters have faced overcrowding, long waiting times and limited fleet availability.
The first 100 buses arrived in Ghana in April 2026. The remaining units are expected later this year under the full 300-bus procurement programme.
According to the government, the initiative aims to expand passenger capacity, extend services to underserved areas and reduce reliance on unreliable, unsafe and costly transport options.
