Celebrated Ghanaian actor Fred Nii Amugi has ignited widespread debate after making a startling revelation about marriage, confessing that given the opportunity to restart his life, he would choose not to walk down the aisle.
The veteran screen icon, who has graced both local and international productions including Holby City, Beasts of No Nation, and The Cursed Ones, made the candid admission during a recent interview. According to Amugi, his years of life experience have profoundly shaped his perspective on relationships and matrimony, leading him to conclude that he would make a different choice if afforded a second chance.

The 77-year-old actor, born November 5, 1948, in Teshie, Accra, has lived a life rich with both professional acclaim and personal sorrow. Beyond his decades-long acting career that began in 1970, Amugi served 33 years as a civil servant, rising to the position of acting director of Supply in Ghana’s Ministry of Finance.
However, it is the profound loss of his only daughter that appears to have cast the longest shadow over his reflections on family and marriage. In a separate interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the veteran actor poignantly recounted losing his daughter to cancer just nine days before her 21st birthday. He described her as “my daughter, my little girl, my wife, my girlfriend, my sidekick, my everything”.
Amugi also revealed that while his family was supportive of his acting career, his wife showed little interest in his professional life. “My wife was not the type to take an interest in what I did as an actor, and when I invited her to anything about acting, she would ask me to go alone,” he recounted. His daughter, by contrast, was his most devoted companion, often volunteering to accompany him when his wife declined.
Despite the devastating loss, Amugi takes pride in his two surviving sons—one an architect married to a fellow architect, and the other a successful fashion entrepreneur based in the United States.
