Trump,80, throws lavish UFC birthday bash on White House lawn as critics cry foul over bloody spectacle

President Donald Trump celebrates his 80th birthday today in typically forceful style, transforming the White House’s South Lawn into a bloody cage-fighting arena for an unprecedented UFC spectacle that has drawn fierce criticism amid a costly war with Iran.

The lavish event — dubbed “UFC Freedom 250” — aims to capitalize on this year’s 250th anniversary of US independence but coincides exactly with Trump’s entry into his ninth decade. Seven matches featuring 14 Ultimate Fighting Championship stars will be held in a $60 million Octagon arena called “The Claw” — an elaborate red-white-and-blue lighting and sound structure that resembles a spaceship. Over 4,000 VIP spectators, including Cabinet leaders and Republican lawmakers, will watch the combatants pummel each other inside a wire-mesh cage, with thousands more expected to view on giant screens on the National Mall.

A Dramatic Departure from Presidential Tradition

Trump has grown far more lavish in his birthday celebrations during his second term. In 2019, as he turned 73, Trump told Fox & Friends he would have “a little piece of cake tonight” because he didn’t “have time to celebrate”. Now, he has mounted an event that critics say makes a mockery of the presidency.

“If his ego wasn’t already big enough, he needed an octagon for it,” said one political observer, reflecting widespread criticism that the event prioritizes self-promotion over presidential dignity. However, the White House has defended the event as a fitting tribute to the nation’s semiquincentennial, noting it falls on both Flag Day and the US Army’s birthday.

The president was previously joined by close friend and UFC President Dana White at a Friday hype session near the Lincoln Memorial — a gathering that saw scuffles break out between competing fighters as thunderstorms disrupted the proceedings. Some fighters are reportedly set to emerge directly from the Oval Office before marching to the South Lawn to fight.

A Bloody Spectacle Shadowed by Bloodier Realities

But the hard realities of the office have threatened to overshadow the glitzy extravaganza. Trump has found himself boxed into an unpopular and costly war in Iran that he helped start, and while a peace deal may be close, crucial details remain unresolved. Critics have derided the violent display as being in poor taste while ordinary Americans struggle with soaring prices and US troops remain engaged in the Middle East.

A US judge on Friday rejected a bid by two local residents to halt the fight on grounds that the event was corrupt, clearing the way for the spectacle to proceed.

The Oldest President Faces Age Questions

Trump — who retook the oath of office in January 2025 at 78 years and seven months, making him the oldest US president ever inaugurated — has consistently compared his vigor favorably to predecessor Joe Biden. Yet questions about his own fitness have persisted, with the president previously admitting to a vein condition in his legs and showing bruised hands from frequent handshaking.

In a video posted by an official this week, Trump conceded he was “not happy about that birthday that I’m having,” adding, “It’s not a number I like, but I’m here nevertheless”. His doctor has since declared him in “excellent health,” scoring a perfect 30 out of 30 on a cognitive assessment and showing strong cardiac function. Still, medical advice urged the president to lose weight and increase physical activity, recommendations he has largely ignored, saying he finds exercise “boring”.

The celebration stands in stark contrast to how Biden, the previous record-holder, turned 80 in November 2022 — with a private family brunch at the White House and no public fanfare. Biden was at that time months away from launching a reelection bid that he ultimately abandoned after a disastrous debate against Trump, amid Democratic concerns that he was too old to handle a second term.

Trump’s festivities will include military bands, a flyover by the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels, a parachute display and a 10-minute fireworks finale. The G7 summit of industrialized nations was reportedly pushed back to accommodate the president’s schedule.

Reached for comment, White House spokesperson Allison Schuster said the event would be “one of the most entertaining nights in American history”.
