Trump in excellent health but advised to lose weight and exercise more, doctor says

President Donald Trump is in “excellent health” but should lose weight and exercise more, according to the results of his annual medical exam released by the White House on Friday.

Capt. Sean Barbabella, the president’s physician, wrote that Trump — who turns 80 next month — has “strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological and overall physical function.” The memo concluded that Trump is “fully fit to carry out all duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State.”

The president visited Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Tuesday for the examination. On his Truth Social platform afterward, he wrote that “everything checked out perfectly.”

Weight gain and cognitive health

Trump now weighs 238 pounds (108 kilograms), having gained 14 pounds (6.3 kilograms) since his April 2025 medical exam. Barbabella said the president has received guidance on diet, physical activity and continued weight loss. He is also taking medication to control his cholesterol.

On cognitive health, Trump scored a perfect 30 out of 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a common test of cognitive function. The memo described his performance as “within normal limits.”

His resting heart rate was 73 beats per minute, and his estimated cardiac age is approximately 14 years younger than his chronological age.

Bruising and vein condition addressed

The exam also addressed previous public concern over bruising on the president’s hands and swelling in his legs. Barbabella explained the bruising as “consistent with minor soft tissue irritation related to frequent handshaking” combined with Trump’s use of aspirin for “cardiovascular prevention.” He noted this was “a common and benign effect of aspirin therapy.”

Trump has previously told the Wall Street Journal that he takes 325mg of aspirin daily — higher than the 81mg dose sometimes recommended by doctors — saying he does not “want thick blood pouring through my heart.”

Regarding his leg swelling, Barbabella noted “improvement from last year” from a vein condition called chronic venous insufficiency, which was diagnosed in July. The memo described “slight lower leg swelling” that remains.

Exercise: ‘It’s boring’

Trump has been open about his aversion to regular exercise beyond playing golf.

“I just don’t like it. It’s boring,” he previously said. “To walk on a treadmill or run on a treadmill for hours and hours like some people do, that’s not for me.”

Despite this, Barbabella wrote that Trump’s “demanding daily schedule, including multiple high-level meetings, public engagements and regular physical activity continues to support his overall well-being.”

Trump is the oldest person ever inaugurated as U.S. president. This marks his third known medical exam since returning to the White House last year.
