At least 13 buildings have been pulled down in the Amrahia community as contractors push ahead with the long-awaited expansion of the Adenta-Dodowa road, GhanaWeb can confirm.
The demolition, which took place on Thursday, 7 May 2026, marks the latest in a series of property removals along the corridor. Affected residents looked on as earthmoving equipment reduced homes and commercial structures to rubble.
Officials say the exercise is necessary to create the required right-of-way for the dual carriageway project, which aims to ease perennial traffic congestion on one of Accra’s busiest northern exit routes.
“We have served multiple notices over several months,” a site supervisor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told GhanaWeb. “This is a public interest project, and the law allows for structures within the approved alignment to be removed.”
The Development Authority had previously cautioned property owners against building too close to the road reserve, but many residents say they received little formal communication.
“I built here five years ago with all permits,” said Madam Ama Serwaa, whose three-bedroom house was reduced to debris. “Nobody told me my home was on government land until last week. Where do we go now?”
Compensation arrangements remain unclear. While the government has assured that affected persons will be duly reimbursed, several homeowners claimed no valuation officers had visited before demolition commenced.
The Adenta-Dodowa road project has faced repeated delays due to funding challenges and litigation over land acquisition. However, with the 2026 deadline approaching, contractors have stepped up the pace.
Traffic diversions are now in place along affected sections of the highway. Motorists have been advised to expect delays and use alternative routes where possible.
