Ronaldinho breaks silence on career critics: “I achieved my dreams while having the time of my life’

In a rare and reflective statement, Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho has pushed back against years of criticism regarding his approach to the game, insisting that his career was not only successful but “perfectly fulfilling” on his own terms.

The two-time FIFA World Player of the Year, who mesmerized fans at Barcelona, Milan, and with the Brazilian national team, has long been the subject of a particular brand of post-career analysis. Critics have frequently speculated that the smiling playmaker could have rivaled Pelé or Maradona for the title of greatest of all time—had he only been more dedicated to training and less fond of nightlife.

“People always say things about me like, ‘If only he took football seriously…’ or ‘If only he didn’t have a nightlife, he would have been even better,’” Ronaldinho said in a recent interview.

For years, the former playmaker has largely laughed off such remarks. But this time, his response carried a sharper, more personal edge.

“They talk without knowing what I’ve been through, and I’m not going to explain it to them,” he added, leaving the door open to untold struggles off the pitch. “All I will say is: I achieved my dreams. And I did it while having the time of my life off the pitch. For me, it was a perfectly fulfilling career.”

The 44-year-old’s statement is notable not just for its defiance, but for its redefinition of success. While statisticians may point to his 2002 World Cup win, 2005 Ballon d’Or, and 2006 Champions League trophy, Ronaldinho argues that joy—not longevity or volume of trophies—was his true metric.

His former Barcelona teammate Xavi Hernández once said, “Ronaldinho brought joy back to Barcelona.” But critics have often added a coda: that joy came at the cost of a longer peak. Ronaldinho’s dominance at the highest level lasted roughly five years before a sharp decline in his late twenties, a drop many attribute to late nights and a lax training ethic.

Yet in his latest comments, the former Grêmio and Flamengo star rejects the premise entirely. He reminds fans that he reached the absolute summit of the sport—winning everything there was to win—while never sacrificing the lifestyle that made him happy.

“For me, football was always an instrument of happiness,” he once said in a documentary. “If I stopped smiling, I would stop playing.”

By refusing to explain the “what I’ve been through” portion of his past, Ronaldinho also hints at personal hardships unknown to the public—perhaps acknowledging that his off-pitch life was not merely indulgence but also, at times, an escape or a necessity.

The message is clear: Ronaldinho will not apologize for the career he had, nor entertain fantasies of a more “serious” version of himself. Instead, he invites us to reconsider the very idea of a fulfilled career—one measured not in what might have been, but in dreams realized, and joy preserved.

“I have no regrets,” he said. “I lived. I played. I conquered. And I did it my way.
