Real Madrid have agreed a deal worth up to £51.8m to sign Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella, in a transfer that has caught his Spain teammates by surprise after the 27-year-old reportedly kept the move a secret from them.
The agreement comprises a fixed fee of €55m (£47.4m) plus a potential €5m (£4.3m) in aons, a sum Chelsea are understood to view as strong value for the left-back. Cucurella is set to sign a six-year contract with the Spanish giants until 2032 after the conclusion of the World Cup, where he is currently representing Spain.
Cucurella’s Desire to Return Home
Sources have revealed that Cucurella expressed a desire to return to Spain for personal and family reasons. Chelsea worked collaboratively with the player and his entourage to find the best solution for all parties, a process that accelerated after Real Madrid’s return of José Mourinho, who was determined to add the left-back to his squad.
The deal was concluded with remarkable speed and secrecy. While Cucurella had publicly insisted he was focused on international duty and did not want transfer speculation to become a distraction, reports indicate that he chose not to inform any of his Spain teammates about the impending move. According to Spanish outlet El Desmarque, players in the national team camp only learned of the transfer when they saw the announcement on social media. An Italian report from Pianeta Champions adds that the squad was left ‘shocked’ by the news.
Hato’s Emergence Paves the Way for Exit
A key factor in Chelsea’s decision to sanction the sale was the exceptional development of 20-year-old Dutch defender Jorrel Hato. Having made just nine appearances in the first half of the 2025-26 season, Hato featured 27 times for Chelsea in 2026, establishing himself as a trusted option at the back. His rapid progress convinced the club they could afford to lose their senior left-back.
Chelsea’s Recruitment Drive
The departure of Cucurella is the first major exit of the Xabi Alonso era, with the new manager set to officially begin his role on July 1. Chelsea’s recruitment drive is now in full swing, with the club looking to add at least two starting-level players who can immediately compete in the Premier League. The Blues are specifically targeting ready-made defensive options, including a new centre-back and a left-back, to bolster Alonso’s options for the upcoming campaign.
