Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has been handed a retrospective five-game suspension by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, while Canada’s Ismael Kone has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 World Cup after suffering severe leg fractures in a horror challenge during Tuesday’s Group D showdown.

The incident occurred in the 67th minute of the match at BC Place Stadium, with Canada leading 1-0. Madibo, attempting to close down Kone in midfield, lunged in with excessive force, catching the Canadian playmaker high on the shin. Kone immediately collapsed in agony, with television replays showing a distressing deformation of his left lower leg.

While the on-field referee initially showed Madibo a yellow card, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) swiftly intervened. Following a pitch-side review, the official upgraded the sanction to a straight red card. However, FIFA took the unprecedented step of extending the punishment further.

On Thursday, football’s governing body confirmed the additional four-match suspension on top of the automatic red-card ban, citing “serious foul play and endangering the safety of an opponent.” Because the ban applies to all FIFA-sanctioned senior matches, Madibo’s tournament is effectively over; he is ineligible for Qatar’s remaining group fixtures and any potential knockout matches.

The injury update delivered a devastating blow to Canada’s squad. Team doctors revealed that Kone suffered compound fractures to both his tibia and fibula. He underwent a successful three-hour emergency orthopedic surgery late Tuesday night in Vancouver and will now require a lengthy rehabilitation period that will keep him sidelined for months.

“I am absolutely heartbroken for Ismael,” Canada head coach John Herdman told reporters on Thursday. “He embodies everything we stand for in this group—grit, skill, and heart. To see him go down like that, and to know his tournament is over, is gut-wrenching for everyone in this locker room. The five-game ban reflects the severity of what happened, but our sole focus right now is supporting Ismael through his recovery.”

Qatar’s head coach Felix Sanchez expressed remorse regarding the incident, stating: “It was an unfortunate accident. I have spoken with Assim, and he is distraught. We have no excuses. We feel terrible for the player and sincerely wish him a speedy recovery. We fully accept the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.”

The loss of Kone is a catastrophic setback for Canada’s ambitions. The 24-year-old was instrumental in their midfield engine, and the team now faces a gruelling remaining group schedule without their primary creative outlet. For Qatar, who have struggled to find momentum in the tournament, losing their defensive anchor for the rest of their campaign adds another layer of frustration to an already difficult World Cup run.

Kone is expected to remain with the Canadian squad to support his teammates before returning to his club for the start of his rehabilitation programme.
