Prez Mahama debuts new Air Force helicopter on Akosombo visit

President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Akosombo on Thursday aboard a newly acquired Ghana Air Force Airbus H175 helicopter, marking the first official deployment of the aircraft for presidential travel.

The landing, captured in video footage that has since circulated widely, showcased the modern twin-engine rotorcraft being introduced into high-level state operations. The President was in the Volta Region town for an official visit.

The Airbus H175, known for its advanced avionics, extended range, and spacious cabin, represents a recent addition to the Ghana Air Force fleet. The helicopter is designed for both civilian and military applications, including troop transport, medical evacuation, and VIP movement.

Aviation analysts say the acquisition strengthens the military’s operational mobility, enabling faster response times and more efficient execution of national assignments, particularly in remote or difficult-to-reach areas.

A short video clip of the landing showed the helicopter touching down smoothly in Akosombo, with President Mahama disembarking to meet local officials. Neither the presidency nor the Air Force has issued a detailed statement on the aircraft’s specifications or procurement, but the development aligns with ongoing government investments to modernise Ghana’s aviation and defense infrastructure.

The use of the Airbus H175 for presidential travel is expected to continue as the Air Force integrates the helicopter into its routine fleet operations.
