May 19, 2012, was meant to be a crowning glory for Bayern Munich. Instead, it became the worst day of Toni Kroos’s career — one that drove the famously composed midfielder to such desperation that he called an emergency doctor on himself.
In a candid reflection, the German international recounted the depths of his frustration after Bayern’s dramatic defeat to Chelsea on home soil at the Allianz Arena.
“I was so drunk that I had to call the emergency doctor. I drank a huge amount of alcohol, and it was the only way to escape the frustration of that night. I remember my wife telling me, ‘You can’t call the emergency doctor just because you drank too much,’ but I had no other solution. Things kept getting worse as time passed, so I had to call the emergency doctor myself.”
The final, watched by 63,000 inside the stadium and tens of thousands more outside, had been billed as a dream come true for the Bavarian club. In the days leading up to the match, Munich was draped in banners reading “One City, One Dream,” with 90,000 tickets sold for public viewing events across the city.
But after a tense 1–1 draw, Chelsea prevailed on penalties, shattering Bayern’s hopes of lifting the Champions League trophy on their own pitch.
Bayern’s sporting director at the time admitted the emotional damage would take a long time to heal. Kroos, widely regarded as one of football’s calmest and most pressure-resistant players, found the weight of the night unbearable — a rare glimpse behind the steely facade of a future world champion.
The loss would fuel Bayern’s redemption the following season, when they captured the treble, including the 2013 Champions League title. But for Kroos, the scars of May 19, 2012, remain deeply personal.
