The inspection focused on critical infrastructure, including the state of the pitch, the effectiveness of the scoreboard, and the functionality of the floodlights, all of which must meet the stringent certification requirements of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for elite international matches.
A Venue Under Pressure
The timing of the inspection is critical. The Accra Sports Stadium has been effectively closed to domestic football since late August, a decision confirmed by Mr. Ankrah himself, who stated the venue would remain dormant until the Black Stars’ AFCON qualifier against The Gambia . This hiatus was intended to allow for necessary rehabilitation work, particularly on the pitch, which has been a source of concern.
The closure has had immediate ripple effects, forcing Accra Hearts of Oak to relocate their opening home matches of the 2026-27 Ghana Premier League season to the University of Ghana Stadium . The pressure is compounded by the fact that the Accra Sports Stadium is currently the only venue in Ghana approved by CAF to host international matches, making its readiness non-negotiable .
The Immediate Challenge: Nations FC vs. FC Diarra
Sunday’s fixture represents a significant hurdle for Ghana’s representation in continental club competition. Nations FC, making their debut in the CAF Confederation Cup, must overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg played in Bamako . The Abrankese-based club, which qualified by winning the MTN FA Cup last season, needs a victory by at least two clear goals to progress to the second preliminary round .

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has expressed confidence that the rehabilitation work will be completed in time. “The only approved venue in Ghana today is the Accra Sports Stadium,” he stated. “I’m very certain that before we play that game against The Gambia, the pitch will be ready” .
As part of the preparations, the GFA has been in discussions with Greengrass Technologies, the company responsible for the pitch, with work expected to intensify in the coming days .
