The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) polling station elections in Ejisu have been suspended following a last-minute disagreement over which voter register should be used for the exercise, the area’s Member of Parliament has alleged.
The elections, originally scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026, failed to proceed after a pending legal suit and an injunction application were served on regional party representatives.
According to the MP for Ejisu, Kwabena Boateng, the dispute centres on conflicting directives regarding the voter register. While some aggrieved party members claim the Ashanti Regional leadership instructed that the Electoral Commission’s voter register be used, Mr Boateng and his supporters insist the party’s internally compiled register — created during its own registration process — was the agreed-upon document.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, Mr Boateng accused unnamed regional leaders of attempting to alter agreed electoral arrangements at the eleventh hour.
“Four days to the elections, after we all agreed that the regulations will be followed to the letter, the regional rep called me to say that although he is aware of the guidelines, he has been instructed by some members in the region that we should not use the polling station register, rather we should use the EC register,” he said.
Mr Boateng argued the timing was deliberate, aimed at preventing aggrieved parties from seeking legal recourse through the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms.
“That was intentional so that you will not have ample time to resort to a legal remedy,” he stated. “Because the NPP constitution will say that before you go to court, you have to exhaust all the internal channels available. So from the beginning they will give you all the indication that the laws will work, but at the last minute you are ambushed and you cannot have the time to seek legal redress.”
The Ejisu MP further alleged that similar incidents have occurred in several constituencies during the party’s internal electoral processes. He dismissed claims that he had interfered with the elections, maintaining that his actions were aimed solely at ensuring adherence to agreed procedures and party regulations.
The NPP has yet to issue an official response to the allegations. The suspended polling station elections remain on hold pending the resolution of the legal challenge.
