MoMo agent crackdown: MobileMoney Fintech suspends accounts over rule breaches

MobileMoney Fintech LTD has launched a major compliance crackdown on its mobile money agent network, temporarily restricting accounts and issuing warnings to operators found violating regulatory standards.

In a statement released Wednesday, the company said routine verification exercises are now underway across the MoMo agent platform to strengthen system security and protect customers.

Depending on the severity of the infraction, agents face tiered penalties. Minor breaches will result in formal warnings, while serious violations could lead to suspension or permanent removal from the platform.

“These measures are designed to protect customers, safeguard the MoMo Agents platform, and maintain trust across the agent network,” the firm said.

MobileMoney Fintech confirmed that affected agents have been contacted, and some have already had their access restored pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.

The enforcement drive comes as mobile money services remain central to Ghana’s financial inclusion strategy, with millions of citizens relying on agent networks for daily transactions. By tightening oversight, the company aims to reduce operational risks and ensure agents operate strictly within approved guidelines.

The firm urged all agents to comply fully with regulatory requirements and stressed that continuous engagement with stakeholders is key to building a more resilient digital payments ecosystem.

Since its launch in 2009, MobileMoney Fintech has registered over 17 million subscribers, offering services ranging from payments and remittances to savings and loans.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Ghana’s digital economy through secure and accessible financial solutions.
