The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has elected new sub-metropolitan and town council chairpersons in a strategic move aimed at strengthening internally generated revenue and accelerating development across the metropolis.

The election, which brought together elected and appointed assembly members as well as unit committee members, forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen decentralised governance and enhance operational efficiency at the grassroots level.

The newly elected leaders are expected to provide effective local leadership by coordinating governance activities, supervising development projects, and facilitating stronger engagement between the assembly and residents.

Mayor’s Charge to New Leaders

Addressing the gathering after the exercise, the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, charged the new chairpersons to approach their responsibilities with discipline, integrity, and a clear commitment to public service.

He stressed that their leadership must reflect the trust reposed in them through improved service delivery and measurable development outcomes in their respective areas.

The Mayor cautioned against an excessive focus on financial benefits associated with the positions, urging members instead to prioritise the welfare of their communities. He noted that the effectiveness of the assembly’s development agenda largely depends on the dedication and collaboration of stakeholders, particularly those at the sub-metro and town council levels.

Revenue Generation Priority

Emphasising the importance of revenue generation, the Mayor underscored the critical role of internally generated funds in financing key infrastructure and social intervention projects within the metropolis. He encouraged the newly elected leaders to adopt innovative, transparent, and accountable strategies to improve revenue mobilisation.

On sanitation, which he indicated remains a major challenge confronting Kumasi, the Mayor called on the chairpersons to take decisive steps in enforcing sanitation by-laws, promoting environmental cleanliness, and working closely with residents to improve waste management practices.

Election Results

Among those elected were Hon. Ernest Baffour Ofori as Chairperson for the Subin Sub-Metro and Hon. Abraham Boadi as Chairperson for the Nhyiaeso Sub-Metro.

In his acceptance remarks, the Nhyiaeso Sub-Metro Chairperson pledged to prioritise revenue mobilisation and sanitation improvement, assuring that his administration would focus on strengthening compliance, enhancing stakeholder collaboration, and contributing meaningfully to the assembly’s development agenda.

The newly elected leaders also highlighted the need to actively involve traditional authorities and community leaders in governance processes, describing such collaboration as essential for achieving sustainable development and improving revenue collection.

Official Induction

The swearing-in ceremony was administered by Her Worship Deborah Gyawaa Donkoh, a District Court Judge at the Prempeh Assembly Hall Court, who led the newly elected officials to take the Oath of Secrecy and the Oath of Allegiance, officially ushering them into office.

The successful election and induction of the sub-metro and town council leadership is widely viewed as a significant step towards revitalising local governance structures in Kumasi. With renewed leadership at the grassroots, the assembly is poised to improve accountability, strengthen its revenue base, and accelerate development initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents across the metropolitan.
