’I cried, but it wasn’t about football’: Messi reveals personal struggles after record-breaking night

On a night when he shattered records and delivered a performance for the ages, Lionel Messi’s most poignant moment came not from a statistic, but from a tearful confession.

After scoring his first of three goals in Argentina’s 3-0 Group J victory over Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium, the 38‑year‑old captain was visibly emotional, pulling his shirt up to wipe away tears. While many assumed the moment was a release of sporting ecstasy, Messi revealed after the match that his tears stemmed from something far more personal.

“To be honest, this had nothing to do with football. I went through some difficult, complicated days,” he said in a candid post‑match interview.

He added: “It was a matter totally unrelated to sports; I went through some hard times.”

The Argentina captain declined to elaborate on the nature of his struggles, choosing instead to express profound gratitude to those who supported him behind the scenes.

“I’m grateful to the entire delegation, to my teammates. They made a lot of effort to make sure I am doing well, and they have been by my side, as always.”

Teammate Enzo Fernández later confirmed the team’s awareness of Messi’s difficulties, describing it as “a family matter” while emphasizing the squad’s unwavering support.

A Night of History

Despite the personal turmoil, Messi delivered a masterclass. His 17th‑minute opener—a stunning left‑footed rocket from 25 yards—was followed by two more goals (60′, 76′), completing his first‑ever World Cup hat‑trick. The treble took his World Cup tally to 16, equaling Miroslav Klose’s all‑time record. He also became the first player to appear in six World Cups and only the second to score in five different tournaments.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni was left in awe: “I’m at a loss for words about Leo. What can I say? He’s incredible. He has been doing this for 20 years now.”

Looking Ahead

Now just one goal shy of becoming the outright top scorer in World Cup history, Messi reflected on his journey. “It makes me very happy to have lived through everything that came my way. What I’m experiencing now is the cherry on top,” he said. “I am very happy and grateful for this wonderful group. I am enjoying it so much.”

For now, the world is left to wonder what private battles the great man is fighting—and to marvel at his ability to rise above them on football’s biggest stage.
