Government delegation storms Black Stars camp in Philadelphia ahead of Croatia decider

With qualification for the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 hanging in the balance, Ghana’s Black Stars received a major psychological boost on the eve of their decisive Group L clash against Croatia as a high-powered government delegation descended on the team’s camp in Philadelphia.

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams led the entourage, accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States H.E. Victor Emmanuel Smith, and Ibrahim Mahama, Group CEO of Engineers and Planners and the team’s headline sponsor.

The visit comes at a pivotal moment for Carlos Queiroz’s side, who sit level on four points with England at the top of Group L after a goalless draw against the Three Lions and a victory over Panama. A win against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday would secure Ghana’s passage to the knockout stages for the first time since 2010.

Minister Adams, who has been a consistent presence in the team’s World Cup preparations including leading spiritual blessings at the Ga traditional council and visiting Prophet Adom Kyei-Duah for prayers, used the opportunity to reinforce the government’s unwavering support. His presence alongside Foreign Affairs Minister Ablakwa underscores the unified national effort behind the team—a sentiment echoed by the committee both ministers sit on to coordinate Ghana’s World Cup campaign.

Ambassador Victor Emmanuel Smith, who has been instrumental in coordinating Ghana’s World Cup engagements on American soil, has previously pledged the embassy’s full backing to ensure the campaign is both successful and memorable. His on-the-ground presence in Philadelphia signals the diplomatic machinery mobilised behind the Black Stars.

Also present was Ibrahim Mahama, whose company Engineers and Planners has already paid US5 million sponsorship package. Mahama has described supporting the Black Stars as “a contribution to national pride and unity”—a commitment now matched by his physical presence alongside the squad.

Midfielder Kwasi Sibo, one of Ghana’s standout performers against England, captured the mood in camp when he declared: “I don’t think, I just believe that we’re going to take all three points. We want to be leaders in the group and we are not looking back”.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz, who has instilled defensive discipline and tactical organisation in his side, reminded his players that “points in this World Cup are terribly expensive”. Victory on Saturday would not only secure progression but send a statement to the rest of the tournament.

With the delegation’s visit serving as a powerful symbol of national unity, the Black Stars now turn their full attention to Saturday’s 5:00 p.m. (ET) kickoff at Lincoln Financial Field. The equation is simple: win and advance.
