Ghana’s gold exports surge on record prices despite Middle East disruptions

Ghana’s gold export earnings have surged to a record high, even as logistical disruptions sparked by the Middle East conflict caused a marginal dip in shipment volumes during the first half of 2026.

Data from the Bank of Ghana indicates that the value of gold exports jumped by 49% to **US8.39 billion recorded in the same period of 2025 . This substantial increase was largely driven by a 49.7% surge in the average realized gold price, which climbed to US$4,463.80 per fine ounce. However, export volumes remained broadly flat, declining by a marginal 0.5% to 2.80 million fine ounces .

The Ripple Effect of Conflict

The Bank of Ghana has attributed the slight volume decline primarily to shipment disruptions triggered by the onset of the Middle East conflict. The escalation of hostilities in the region has had a direct impact on Ghana’s key export value chain. The World Bank has highlighted that Ghana was forced to reroute some gold shipments through Shanghai and India after disruptions affected the traditional refining route through the United Arab Emirates (UAE) .

This logistical pivot adds costly delays to a sector that is increasingly vital to Ghana’s foreign exchange earnings. “Ghana’s gold refining routes through the United Arab Emirates were disrupted, requiring costly rerouting to Shanghai and India and adding logistical delays to a key export value chain,” the World Bank stated .

A Concentrated Export Market

The development raises significant questions about the resilience of Ghana’s gold export infrastructure in the face of prolonged geopolitical tensions. The UAE remains Ghana’s leading gold destination, capturing a dominant 40.8% share of total shipments in 2025, followed by India with 20.7% .

This heavy reliance on a single corridor creates significant vulnerability. The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), the state-run exporter for artisanal gold, has previously indicated that approximately 80% of Ghana’s gold is refined in the UAE . While GoldBod officials have stated that contingency routes have been drafted and that global demand for gold remains robust, the process of rerouting to alternative hubs like Shanghai introduces higher transportation and processing costs .

Broader Economic Risks

The World Bank has warned that a prolonged Middle East conflict could exacerbate global trade disruptions, drive higher energy prices, and fuel inflationary pressures. This underscores a broader vulnerability in Ghana’s economy, which relies heavily on gold and cocoa exports .

While the surge in gold prices has propelled total export earnings to a record US$18.2 billion for the first half of 2026—boosting the nation’s trade surplus and foreign exchange position—the situation highlights the structural challenge of export concentration . As of July 2026, gold alone represented approximately 68.3% of total export earnings, a figure that exposes the economy to adverse price shifts and external shocks .

Despite the immediate logistical hiccups, the high value of gold is expected to continue supporting Ghana’s economic recovery. However, officials have not yet outlined clear measures to secure alternative, less costly export routes that are immune to regional instability, leaving the sector’s future resilience uncertain.
