Ghana to host 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as part of 70th independence anniversary celebrations

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has selected Ghana as the host nation for the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in 2027, a milestone year in which the West African country will also mark 70 years of independence.

The tournament, scheduled to take place next year, will see 12 of Africa’s most promising young football teams compete for continental glory. It will be the second time Ghana has staged the competition, having previously hosted and won the event in 1999 in front of its home supporters.

For Ghana, the decision adds another layer of significance. The nation’s 70th independence anniversary celebrations will highlight a rich football heritage and a longstanding contribution to the development of the sport across Africa. Ghana’s youth programme has consistently produced world‑class talent, with the country earning a reputation as a cradle of African footballing excellence.

Ghana remains the first African nation to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup, having lifted the trophy in 2009. The country’s under‑20 system has helped launch the careers of numerous icons, including Stephen Appiah, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Samuel Osei Kuffour, Derek Boateng, André Ayew and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, among others.

Beyond the continental title, the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations serves as a crucial pathway to the global stage. The top four teams from the tournament will secure Africa’s slots at the next FIFA U-20 World Cup, adding considerable weight to every match.

The most recent edition of the competition, held in Egypt, was won by South Africa – a result that underlines the growing competitiveness and rising quality of youth football across the continent.

CAF has yet to announce specific dates, host cities and venues for the Ghana 2027 tournament. Further details are expected to be released in due course.
