Ghana signs MOU with Chinese firm to develop Volta economic corridor

The Ghanaian government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese firm to develop the Volta Economic Corridor, a large-scale infrastructure project designed to accelerate industrial growth and strengthen regional trade links.

The agreement, announced on April 16, 2026, forms a key part of the government’s broader strategy to drive economic transformation through strategic investments in transport and industry. The corridor is expected to significantly boost Ghana’s logistics capacity and position the country as a competitive production hub.

Development will focus on transport infrastructure, industrial zones, and agro-processing facilities along the Volta Basin. A central feature of the project is the planned upgrade of inland water transport on Lake Volta, which will allow for more efficient movement of goods between different regions of the country.

Authorities say the corridor will help establish Ghana as a strategic gateway for trade in West Africa, particularly improving access to landlocked neighbours including Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

The Chinese partner will provide technical expertise, investment, and infrastructure development support. The collaboration reflects Ghana’s ongoing strategy of working with international partners to accelerate industrialisation and economic expansion.

Beyond transport and logistics, the project is expected to generate jobs, promote agricultural value addition, and strengthen supply chains across key sectors. Private sector participation through co-investment and operational partnerships is also seen as central to the corridor’s long-term success.

Economic analysts say that once fully developed, the Volta Economic Corridor could significantly reduce transportation costs and improve trade efficiency by linking production centres directly with markets.

Stakeholders are now expected to focus on implementation timelines, funding arrangements, and measures to ensure sustainable development outcomes.
