Former UN Chief’s widow welcomes keynote speaker at Geneva Airport’s ‘Espace Kofi Annan’

On the eve of delivering the keynote address at the World Health Assembly, a high-level visitor received a personal and historic welcome at Geneva Airport, led by Mrs. Nane Annan, the widow of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Joined by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Mrs. Annan greeted the speaker upon arrival. In a gesture rich with diplomatic symbolism, she then escorted the guest on a tour of the Espace Kofi Annan (Kofi Annan Lounge), the airport’s official protocol salon dedicated to the legacy of the late Ghanaian diplomat.

A Tribute to a Global Statesman

The lounge, inaugurated on October 3, 2022, on what would have been Annan’s 82nd birthday, is more than a waiting area for dignitaries. According to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the space was created to honor a man who “unceasingly fought for international cooperation to tackle global challenges”.

The walls of the lounge feature selected phrases from Annan’s speeches and images highlighting his work, intended to serve “as a source of inspiration for world leaders who come to Geneva to negotiate,” officials stated at the time of its naming.

Mrs. Annan, a member of the Kofi Annan Foundation Board, was visibly moved by the tribute during the tour. Her presence carried particular weight, recalling her emotional address at the UN General Assembly following her husband’s death in 2018, where she described him as having a “glowing aura of radiant warmth and joy of life”.

The Gateway to Multilateralism

The choice of venue was deeply symbolic. Geneva is often called the “capital of peace” and houses the European headquarters of the UN. The airport serves as the primary gateway for global health ministers and diplomats attending the World Health Assembly.

“The airport is the gateway to International Geneva and an important asset for the centre of global governance,” noted Corine Moinat, Chair of the Board of Directors of Geneva Airport, during the lounge’s inauguration. Kofi Annan chose Geneva as his home after leaving the UN and founded his foundation there in 2007 to promote peaceful global governance.

A Moment for Global Health

The tour preceded the speaker’s address to the World Health Assembly, which is currently underway in Geneva. The 79th meeting of the assembly runs from May 18 to May 23 and is taking place against a backdrop of significant challenges.

This year’s assembly is grappling with pressing health emergencies, including hantavirus and Ebola outbreaks, as well as the financial and political fallout from the announced withdrawal of the United States from the WHO. In his opening remarks, Dr. Tedros—who personally extended the invitation for the keynote—has called for global solidarity, echoing the very words of Kofi Annan inscribed in the airport lounge: “Global solidarity is both necessary and achievable”.

Following the tour, the speaker thanked Mrs. Annan for preserving her husband’s vision of multilateralism, noting that the principles of international cooperation Annan championed are precisely what global health governance requires today.
