Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo is set to be flown abroad for further medical treatment after undergoing two surgeries at the 37 Military Hospital following a gunshot injury, her Special Assistant, Dr Emmanuel Y. Boakye, has confirmed.
The former legislator sustained gunshot wounds on Sunday, 21 June 2026, during a violent incident at the residence of her younger brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, in Kwabenya, Accra. The shooting occurred amid an escalating succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission following the death of its founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo.
According to Dr Boakye, who spoke on GhanAkoma on Akoma 87.9 FM, the former MP has already undergone two surgical procedures at the 37 Military Hospital. “Adwoa has undergone two surgeries and is expected to be flown abroad for further treatment to prevent further damage to her face,” he stated.
The aide did not disclose the specific destination for the overseas treatment but indicated that arrangements are being considered to ensure her full recovery. Medical sources confirm that she is currently under care at the military hospital, where she is being closely monitored by doctors following the procedures.
According to police reports, Adwoa Safo arrived at the Kwabenya Police Station at about 10:30 a.m. on the day of the incident with a bullet-riddled Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. The vehicle had sustained gunshot damage to the rear passenger-side window and front fender. Visibly injured, she informed police that armed security guards had opened fire on her vehicle after her brother instructed them to do so. She sustained injuries to her left ear and right hand.
Witnesses reported that about 45 bullets were allegedly fired at her vehicle during the confrontation. Police later recovered 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition, 25 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition, and two Glock pistols from Akofena’s vehicle and residence.
The Ghana Police Service has arrested nine suspects in connection with the incident, including Akofena, who reported himself to authorities on 22 June, and six private security guards previously taken into custody. All suspects are expected to be arraigned before court. The Ministry of the Interior has also suspended the license of the Kantaka Security Service over the incident.
The Safo Kantanka family has expressed concern about Adwoa Safo’s condition. Family Secretary Dr Philip Siaw Kissi said efforts to reach her directly have been unsuccessful. “If someone is your relative and something happens to him or her, even before you see the person, everyone is worried,” he told Adom FM.
Police say investigations are ongoing, and the former MP’s damaged vehicle has been retained for ballistic examination.
