Dave Bishop unveils strategic vision for Ghana Boxing

In a significant tactical recalibration ahead of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) elections scheduled for June 4, 2026, prominent promoter and community developer Dave Bishop has officially filed to run for the position of 2nd Vice President.

This announcement follows Bishop’s recent withdrawal from the race for 1st Vice President, a move his campaign describes as a deliberate long-term strategy to foster unity and deepen institutional relationships within the local boxing fraternity .

A Strategic Move for Stability

Mr. Bishop, the Founder and CEO of Bishop Boxing Promotions, confirmed the switch earlier this week. According to campaign statements, the decision came after extensive consultations with stakeholders who advised that his expertise in athlete management and international marketing would be best utilized in the 2nd Vice President role.

“This strategic move will allow us to deepen our relationships within the boxing community and let our actions and service to Ghana boxing demonstrate our commitment and competence,” a statement from the campaign noted, framing the shift not as a retreat but as an opportunity to serve the sport’s infrastructural needs .

The election, set to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium, marks a critical juncture for the sport following months of sweeping reforms and the dissolution of the previous board due to a safety crisis last year . The new leadership will be tasked with implementing medical and governance reforms to restore credibility to Ghanaian boxing.

From the Ring to the Boardroom

Dave Bishop brings a dual-threat capability to the ticket: a background in high-profile event marketing combined with grassroots community development.

As the founder of the Detroit Choice Awards and Detroit Choice Events, Bishop has a track record of executing large-scale integrated marketing campaigns. Locally, his promotional outfit has been active in revitalizing the fight calendar, recently signing knockout specialist Wasiru ‘Gyatabi’ Mohammed and launching the ‘Round Queens’ agency to professionalize ring card presentation and empower women in sports entertainment .

His campaign for the GBA executive committee is themed around practical, community-centered results, focusing on:

· Talent Pipelines: Establishing youth academies to identify promising athletes from the grassroots.
· Commercial Partnerships: Leveraging his relationship with brands like Heineken and Clear Channel to bring increased investment into the sport .
· Athlete Welfare: Advocating for transparent administration and modernizing training environments.

A Lifetime of Service and Global Recognition

Beyond the ring, Bishop’s commitment to Ghanaian society is well-documented. He is the founder of Going2Ghana.com, a tourism platform recently awarded the Best Ghanaian Tourism Company 2025 by LUXlife Magazine for its efforts in cultural exchange and diaspora engagement .

His philanthropic arm, Global Friends Community Development, has spearheaded infrastructure projects in the Central Region, including the construction of teachers’ quarters and water borehole drilling. In October 2024, he received The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for accumulating over 4,000 hours of volunteer service.

Honorary Doctorate and Future Outlook

Adding to his credentials, Bishop is set to receive an Honorary Doctorate in Global Leadership and Sports Management from Kennedy University in Miami, Florida, in June 2026.

“My approach is results-driven,” Bishop stated. “We need a framework where fighters, trainers, and clubs can thrive long after the final bell. I am ready to bring my experience in global leadership and event production to help elevate Ghanaian boxing to its rightful place on the world stage.”

The GBA elections will take place on June 4, with nominations officially closing on May 19. Bishop will be contesting the 2nd Vice President slot against other candidates vying to serve under the new President and 1st Vice President .
