China has pledged to remain a steadfast force for peace, stability and shared progress on the world stage as it marked the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Speaking at a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Accra last Tuesday, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Cong Song said the Communist Party of China seeks not only the happiness of the Chinese people and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, but also the progress of humanity and the common good of the world.
“China is committed to broadening the convergence of interests with all countries and firmly safeguarding world peace and tranquility,” Ambassador Cong said. He added that Beijing remains dedicated to promoting coordination and constructive interactions among major countries, positioning China as a stabilising force in global strategic affairs.
The well-attended event brought together members of the diplomatic community, Ghanaian government officials, security agencies, and Chinese nationals living in Ghana. Cultural performances by both Chinese and Ghanaian artists highlighted the growing people-to-people bonds between the two nations.
Ambassador Cong noted that China has achieved new historic milestones in high-quality development while sharing opportunities with the rest of the world. He reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to advancing high-level opening-up and promoting high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, guided by the principles of sincerity, real results, amity and good faith, alongside a balanced approach to justice and interests.
On relations with Africa, the ambassador described solidarity and cooperation with African countries as a cornerstone of China’s foreign policy. China, he said, is determined that no country should be left behind in the process of global modernisation.
Turning to bilateral ties, Ambassador Cong traced the China-Ghana friendship to the founding leaders of both nations — Chairman Mao Zedong, Premier Zhou Enlai and Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah. Diplomatic relations were established on July 5, 1960, making Ghana one of the earliest sub-Saharan African countries to recognise the People’s Republic of China. Over the subsequent 66 years, the two countries have consistently supported each other, safeguarded their shared interests and those of the Global South, and elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership in September 2024.
