Carlos Queiroz bolsters Black Stars technical team with veteran goalkeeper coach Dan Gaspar

The Black Stars’ technical bench has been significantly strengthened ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the addition of experienced goalkeeper trainer Dan Gaspar, who joins Carlos Queiroz’s backroom staff as Ghana intensifies preparations for the global tournament.

Gaspar, currently the goalkeeper coach at USL club Hartford Athletic, will take on a similar role with the national team. His appointment marks his fourth FIFA World Cup appearance in a coaching capacity.

The move is part of a broader restructuring under newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz, who is assembling a blend of international expertise and local experience. Gaspar and Queiroz share a professional relationship spanning nearly three decades, having previously worked together with the Portugal and Iran national teams during past World Cup campaigns.

Reacting to his appointment, Gaspar described the opportunity as a significant personal milestone.

“Representing Ghana on the world stage in my home country is an incredible honour,” he told his club’s website. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to get to work with such a talented group of players and staff. Competing at the World Cup again is a dream come true. I’m fully committed to helping the team prepare, perform, and make our supporters proud.”

Hartford Athletic officials paid tribute to Gaspar’s contribution, highlighting his role in the club’s recent progress, including their USL Jägermeister Cup success and improved defensive performances.

Former Black Stars players, including Fatau Dauda and John Paintsil, are expected to remain part of the backroom staff, providing institutional knowledge and continuity as the team transitions under new leadership.

Queiroz, appointed earlier this month, has outlined his intention to build a competitive squad capable of making an impact at the tournament, drawing on his extensive experience managing at previous World Cups and top clubs.

Ghana will be making its fifth appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, staged across Canada, Mexico and the United States. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The team opens its campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto.
