Brazil vs Morocco breaks World Cup ticket record as 80,000 fans pack MetLife Stadium

Brazil’s World Cup opener against Morocco at MetLife Stadium has become the hottest ticket of the tournament so far, with FIFA confirming approximately 80,000 tickets sold for Saturday’s Group C clash — a capacity crowd for one of the most anticipated matches of the group stage.

The fixture has also set a tournament record for hospitality sales, with more than 10,000 premium seats already purchased, surpassing even the World Cup final in that category — at least for now. Organizers expect the final to eventually claim that top spot once the knockout rounds are set.

📊 By the Numbers

Metric Figure
Tickets sold ~80,000 (near 100% capacity)
Hospitality seats sold 10,000+ (tournament record)
MetLife capacity 80,663
FIFA rankings (Brazil) No. 6
FIFA rankings (Morocco) No. 8

This is the only group-stage fixture featuring two top-10 ranked nations. Brazil are six-time champions (not five) and have appeared in every World Cup since the competition began in 1930, while Morocco reached the semifinals in 2022 — the best-ever result by an African nation.

🏟️ Venue & Global Context

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey — officially renamed New York New Jersey Stadium for the tournament due to FIFA sponsorship rules — will host eight matches in total, including the final on July 19. With a capacity of 80,663, it is one of the largest venues in World Cup history.

Brazil, seeking their sixth world title, enter the tournament after a rocky qualifying campaign that saw them finish fifth in the South American standings — their worst performance since the qualifying format was introduced 30 years ago. Despite that, Carlo Ancelotti (who became the first foreign coach to lead Brazil at a World Cup) has the weight of history behind him: Brazil has not lost a World Cup opening match in over 20 games, with 17 wins and three draws. The Opta supercomputer gives Brazil a 58.6% chance of winning, with a draw predicted 23.5% of the time and a Morocco victory in just 18.8% of simulations.

Neymar remains sidelined with a calf injury and is not expected to feature against Morocco, though team officials hope he will be ready for the second group match against Haiti in Philadelphia. In his absence, Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior — the 2024 Ballon d’Or runner-up — will lead the attack alongside Barcelona’s Raphinha, who was directly involved in more goals than any other Brazil player during qualifying (five goals, two assists).

On the Moroccan side, captain Achraf Hakimi was named in the squad despite an injury sustained in the Champions League semi-finals, but he has been pictured in training and is expected to start. Morocco arrive with momentum: the Atlas Lions won all eight of their qualifying matches and were controversially awarded the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title after Senegal forfeited the final.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM local time (Eastern Time).
