ASAC 2026: Ghana’s 100m trio Joe Paul, Gadayi,and Saminu cruise into semi-finals

Ghana’s hopes in the men’s 100 metres at the African Seniors Athletics Championships (ASAC) remain firmly alive as Joseph Paul Amoah, Edwin Gadayi, and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu all secured their places in the semi-finals.

Competing in the evening session on the opening day of the continental showpiece at the University of Ghana Stadium on Tuesday, the Ghanaian sprinters each finished second in their respective heats to advance.

Edwin Gadayi was the first of the trio to take the track in Heat 2. He crossed the line behind Zimbabwe’s Mathembe Tshuma, easing through to the next round.

In Heat 5, national record holder Joseph Paul Amoah showed his class to finish second, with Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme claiming top spot in the race.

Abdul-Rasheed Saminu then completed a clean sweep of runners-up finishes for Ghana, placing second in Heat 7 behind Nigeria’s Chidera Ezeakor.

All three will now return to the track later on Tuesday for the semi-finals, scheduled for 18:30 GMT, where they will battle for a place in the final of the blue-riband event.
