World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe touched down in Accra on Friday to a warm official reception, declaring through his presence Ghana’s growing status as a credible host of major international sporting events.
The global athletics chief was met at the airport by the President of Ghana Athletics, Bawa Fuseini, in a ceremony that underscored the strong bond between the local governing body and the world governing body ahead of the 2026 African Seniors Athletics Championships.
Lord Coe’s visit is widely seen as a major vote of confidence in Ghana’s ability to organise a championship of continental excellence. It also signals the growing collaboration between Ghana Athletics, the Confederation of African Athletics, and World Athletics to develop the sport across Africa.
Speaking shortly after welcoming the World Athletics President, Mr. Fuseini expressed pride in the milestone.
“This is a proud moment for Ghana Athletics,” he said. “Lord Coe’s presence here is a clear testament to the hard work being put in and the trust the global body has in us. Accra is ready, and we will not disappoint Africa.”
The 2026 African Seniors Athletics Championships is expected to draw the continent’s finest athletes, officials, and fans to Accra for a celebration of unity, excellence, and unforgettable track and field performances.
With Lord Coe now on the ground, the heat is building. Accra, organisers say, is ready.
