The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Rev. Dr. Kweku Addo, has donated motorcycles and aboboyaa tricycles to selected youth in his constituency in a gesture aimed at empowering them with the means to establish sustainable livelihoods.
The donation, which took place on Sunday, September 13, forms part of the MP’s broader commitment to supporting programmes and interventions that uplift constituents and strengthen the foundation of prosperity for future generations.
“I remain dedicated to supporting programs and interventions that uplift our people and strengthen the foundation of prosperity for generations to come,” Rev. Addo stated following the donation. “Together, we rise as a stronger constituency.”
A Constituency Rooted in Enterprise
Ablekuma West, one of 45 constituencies created for the 2012 general election, encompasses communities including Dansoman, Sahara, Gbegbeyise, Agege, Glefe, Opetekwe, and Shiabu . With a voter population exceeding 100,000, the constituency is home to a diverse mix of professionals and a local economy driven largely by small and medium-sized enterprises, with many residents engaged in buying and selling .
This economic reality makes livelihood support initiatives particularly significant. During the 2024 election campaign, unemployment and economic hardship emerged as defining issues for the electorate, with the Chief of Gbegbe, Nii Adote Faamlite I, highlighting that the constituency had been deprived for too long and needed greater attention to improve residents’ livelihoods .
The MP’s Track Record of Community Support
Rev. Dr. Kweku Addo, who made history in December 2024 by unseating the incumbent Ursula Owusu-Ekuful to become the first NDC Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, has demonstrated a consistent commitment to community engagement since taking office .
Beyond the current donation, the MP has led several humanitarian initiatives, including the distribution of nearly 100 wheelchairs to persons with disabilities in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Accra East and Hope the Chair . He has also partnered with the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly to commence dredging works at Shiabu to clear choked main gutters and improve sanitation .
Addressing a gathering at the wheelchair donation ceremony, Rev. Addo underscored the importance of strategic partnerships in responding to the needs of vulnerable groups, noting that “leadership must be measured by its impact on lives” .
A Broader National Push for Youth Empowerment
The MP’s initiative aligns with the government’s broader agenda to create economic opportunities for young people. Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang recently announced that the government is targeting 10,000 young people and businesses annually through the Adwumawura programme, which provides entrepreneurship training, business development support, and access to funding .
Speaking at an event in September 2026, the Vice President emphasized that “creating opportunities for the youth was important to addressing some of the challenges facing Ghana and the wider West African region.” She also highlighted the National Apprenticeship Programme, which is expanding opportunities for young people to acquire practical, technical, and vocational skills, and the One Million Coders programme aimed at equipping Ghanaians with digital skills .
The National Apprenticeship Programme has already begun distributing tools and equipment to beneficiaries across the country. In Tema, the first batch of beneficiaries received sewing machines, electrical tool kits, welding and plumbing equipment, and personal protective equipment to support their transition from training into income-generating activities .
The Man Behind the Initiative
Rev. Dr. Kweku Addo’s journey to public service is rooted in a diverse professional background. Born on August 23, 1967, he began his education in Accra before studying in Germany and later moving to the United States, where he acquired skills in banking, public speaking, communications, nursing, and real estate practice .
Upon returning to Ghana, he established Igloo Real Estate Limited and assumed directorship of Oddarene Christian School. A lay minister who served in the Lighthouse Chapel International Ministry for over a decade, he earned a Doctorate in Moral Philosophy from the International Ministerial Bible Training College .
His political journey began when a conversation with a late friend, Humphrey Mensah, son of the renowned statesman E.T. Mensah, encouraged him to join the NDC . After an unsuccessful first parliamentary bid in 2020, he persisted and won the party’s primaries again in 2023, going on to secure 31,866 votes against Ursula Owusu-Ekuful’s 26,575 in the 2024 general election .
Reflecting on his victory, Rev. Addo stated: “I feel this is truly God’s timing. This victory is not just mine; it belongs to everyone who believed in me and my vision for the constituency. I am here to serve and will work tirelessly to bring development to this area” .
