Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has shed new light on the low-key, almost understated conversation that secured Lionel Messi’s participation in the 2026 World Cup — revealing that the legendary forward insisted on being treated like any other player.
In an interview published Tuesday, Scaloni detailed the exchange that ended months of speculation over whether the 38-year-old world champion would extend his record-breaking World Cup career into a sixth edition.
“Well, I simply sent him a message. He told me that he would wait for the squad announcement,” Scaloni said
The conversation, according to the coach, was characteristically straightforward. Messi did not issue a grand public declaration of his intentions, nor did he demand assurances. Instead, he posed a simple, almost deferential question.
“He asked me whether he would be among the called-up players. So I told him: ‘Alright, you’re in the squad,’ and that was the end of it,” Scaloni recalled.
The Argentina boss admitted he had long assumed his captain would make a theatrical return — perhaps a televised address or a social media statement confirming his place at the finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“We all expected that he might make some kind of announcement and I was probably the first to think he would,” Scaloni said. “But in the end, he did what any player would do: he waited for the coach’s call-up. That’s all.”
For Scaloni, the absence of fanfare was a profound relief. After guiding Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, Messi had hinted that the tournament in Qatar would be his last. But as qualifying for 2026 progressed, rumors swirled that he might reverse course — especially given Argentina’s status as defending champions.
“It gave me a lot of peace of mind when he told me he wasn’t going to make any announcement and that he would simply wait for the list of selected players,” Scaloni said. “And that’s exactly what happened.”
Messi, now playing for Inter Miami in MLS, has not publicly commented on the exchange. However, his name is expected to feature prominently when Scaloni unveils his preliminary roster later this year.
For Argentine fans, the news confirms what many had hoped: their captain will lead them into battle once more, not with a dramatic declaration, but with the quiet professionalism that has defined the latter stages of his career.
“He asked if he would be called up,” Scaloni added with a smile. “As if there was ever any doubt.”
