Cop turned reality star sparks fury: Love Island contestant quits Pennsylvania Force after months of training

A police officer’s decision to trade his badge for a spot in the “Love Island” villa has ignited a political firestorm in his Pennsylvania hometown, with the mayor publicly blasting the move as a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Sean Reifel, a newly sworn officer with the Bethlehem Police Department, was announced as a cast member on the latest season of “Love Island USA” last week. His resignation, less than a year after joining the force, has left city officials frustrated and residents divided.

Mayor J. William Reynolds did not hide his disappointment.

“I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer,” the mayor told local media. He noted that the city spent thousands of taxpayer dollars to send Reifel to the police academy, and that the vacated position cannot be filled until next year.

Police Chief Michelle Kott echoed that sentiment in an interview with the BBC.

“I would be less than candid if I didn’t acknowledge my disappointment in losing another police officer,” Chief Kott said, revealing that Reifel’s departure leaves the department with 16 officer vacancies. “Law enforcement agencies across the United States continue to face significant recruiting and retention challenges.”

Hometown Divided

The controversy has become the talk of Bethlehem, a historic city of 75,000 residents known for its colonial architecture and industrial heritage.

Local business owner Kristine Ruff said the news spread like wildfire through the community.

“Everyone is sending the show clips from Instagram to each other, saying, ‘Can you believe that it’s a local guy that’s on the show?'” Ruff told the BBC.

While some residents wish Reifel well, others have voiced anger on community Facebook groups, arguing that their tax dollars helped train him and questioning the professionalism of appearing on a dating show.

Family Fires Back

Reifel’s family has since taken to social media to defend him, pushing back against claims of wasted public funds.

His mother, Beth Reifel Bow, argued that city leaders were not “fully honest” about the costs, stating that her son had prior police training before joining Bethlehem.

His sister, Brice Marie, suggested the city missed an opportunity to improve public perception of law enforcement.

“They chose a response that will likely reinforce the stereotypes they should be working to change,” she wrote.

On the season premiere, Reifel introduced himself to a national audience, stating, “I’m not a model, not an actor, I’m a police officer actually.” The winner of the show takes home a $100,000 prize, though contestants typically gain more from influencer deals and brand sponsorships.

The Bethlehem Police Department swore Reifel into service in August 2025. The department’s website lists a starting salary of just under $70,000 for officers.
