PSG Retain Champion Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their Champions League crown on Saturday night, defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in a tense final at the Puskás Aréna.
Kai Havertz gave Arsenal a dream start, firing the Premier League champions into the lead after just six minutes. But Ousmane Dembélé’s second-half penalty dragged PSG level, and with no further goals in normal or extra time, the trophy was decided from the spot.
It was Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães who skied the decisive kick, sparking wild PSG celebrations while consoling embraces from opposition captain Marquinhos offered a poignant counterpoint to the heartbreak.
Havertz Strike Rocks PSG
Mikel Arteta’s Gunners, crowned Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years just seven days earlier, could not have wished for a better start. Havertz — who scored the winner for Chelsea against Manchester City in the 2021 final — burst clear of the PSG backline and rifled into the roof of the net.
But from that moment, Luis Enrique’s side seized control. Dominating possession with 75% of the ball, PSG laid siege to the Arsenal goal. Centre-backs Gabriel and William Saliba produced a series of vital interventions as the French champions piled forward.
Dembélé Levels from the Spot
The equaliser came in the 65th minute. A clever run from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia caught stand-in right-back Cristhian Mosquera off guard, and the Spaniard’s clumsy tackle conceded a penalty. Dembélé stepped up and rolled the ball coolly into the net.
Arsenal were forced to defend deep as the Budapest heat and PSG’s relentless passing took their toll. Kvaratskhelia struck a post and Vitinha went close from the edge of the area as the Ligue 1 side pushed for a winner.
Shootout Agony for Arsenal
After an exhausting extra time, the final came down to penalties. Eberechi Eze saw his spot-kick drift wide, and after Nuno Mendes’ effort was saved by David Raya, the shootout remained level until Gabriel stepped up. The Brazilian defender, immense throughout the final, blazed over the crossbar to hand PSG victory.
Historic Achievement for PSG
PSG become only the second side in the Champions League era to retain the trophy, joining Real Madrid who won three in a row between 2016 and 2018. It caps a second successive league and European double for the Parisian club.
For Arsenal, the pain of a second Champions League final defeat — 20 years after their 2-1 loss to Barcelona — will linger. But Arteta’s side can still reflect on an outstanding season that ended a 22-year wait for English top-flight glory.
