Chelsea legend John Terry has firmly rejected a fan’s suggestion that Thomas Tuchel is the best manager in the club’s history, insisting that another iconic boss remains unmatched.
The debate erupted when a supporter claimed Tuchel—who led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021—deserved the title. Terry, however, responded bluntly:
“No, my friend, that’s not true. Everyone knows who the BEST in Chelsea’s history is. He’s the one who shaped me, shaped Lampard, shaped Drogba, and used to tell us we were the best! And he truly believed it! He was the best.”
While Terry didn’t name him outright, the description points unmistakably to José Mourinho, who transformed Chelsea after his 2004 arrival, winning back-to-back Premier League titles and instilling a dynasty-defining winning mentality.
Terry went on to reveal just how revolutionary Mourinho’s methods were:
“When he arrived at Chelsea, we were doing training sessions that I now see other coaches replicating. People are just starting to realize what he was doing back then. He was ahead of his time!”
The former captain also shared a remarkable anecdote that underlined Mourinho’s tactical genius:
“Once, he told us Barcelona’s lineup two days before we faced them, and when Barcelona announced their actual lineup, everyone in the locker room was shocked. From that moment, we believed we were going to win.”
Tuchel remains a beloved figure among Chelsea fans for the 2021 Champions League triumph, but for Terry—and many who lived through the Mourinho era—there is only one answer when it comes to the greatest coach in Chelsea’s history.
