A special memorial boxing contest will be staged in Takoradi on December 25, 2025, as part of the Christmas festivities to pay tribute to the late Ghanaian boxing icon, Mr. Eddie Blay, an Olympian and proud native of Sekondi-Takoradi.
The event will feature a competition between juvenile boxers from the Western and Central Regional teams, with participants aged between six and eight years old.
A magnificent trophy, donated by Madam Avis Vera Yankey, founder of the Savita Howe NGO, will be up for grabs.
Organized by the Western Regional Boxing Federation in collaboration with Savita Howe and supported by Wilsad Support Limited and Sky Media Group, the contest has been integrated into the Sky Power Westside Carnival, which includes a masqueraders competition and parade at the Fun City Ground.
The programme will take place on Liberation Road, near Stanbic and SG-SSB Banks, with boxing bouts commencing at 5:00 pm to precede the main carnival activities.
Mr. Twintoh Walker, President of the Central Regional branch of the Ghana Boxing Federation, highlighted Blay’s illustrious career, noting his participation in the 1960 Rome Olympics and the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where he clinched a bronze medal in the light welterweight category.
Blay was also a two-time Commonwealth Games champion, winning gold medals in 1962 in Perth, Australia, and in 1966 in Kingston, Jamaica.
