President John Dramani Mahama has announced a November 2027 completion target for the long-delayed reconstruction of the La General Hospital, following an inspection tour of the project site.
The President, accompanied by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, expressed confidence that the facility would be ready for commissioning within the set timeframe. He commended contractors and workers for steady progress and urged all parties to maintain momentum and adhere strictly to deadlines.
According to President Mahama, the prolonged closure of the hospital has placed significant pressure on nearby health facilities in Accra and surrounding communities. He described the project’s completion as critical to restoring accessible, quality healthcare services to residents of the La enclave and beyond.
The reconstruction initially began in 2020 but faced substantial delays due to funding constraints and outstanding payment issues. Minister Akandoh explained that work resumed in earnest in 2025 after those challenges were resolved, and construction is now progressing steadily.
Once completed, the hospital is expected to serve more than 50,000 residents in La and adjoining communities, helping to decongest major referral hospitals and strengthen healthcare capacity in the Greater Accra Region.
President Mahama also outlined broader health sector reforms, including efforts to improve emergency response systems and strengthen preventive healthcare. He announced plans to repurpose the COVID-era emergency facility at Burma Camp to handle emergency cases, reducing congestion and treatment delays at the capital’s major hospitals.
The President highlighted the recently launched Free Primary Healthcare initiative as a key intervention to expand access to basic health services and ease financial burdens on households nationwide.
The La General Hospital reconstruction remains a flagship healthcare infrastructure project under the government’s agenda to modernise health facilities and improve service delivery across the country.
