Police dismiss escape rumours, confirm all suspects in Andrew Amankwa murder case still in custody

The Ghana Police Service has firmly rejected widespread media claims that four suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Andrew Amankwa, father-in-law of Goldbod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi, have escaped from lawful custody.

Mr Amankwa was fatally shot during an armed robbery at the Ohwim Tigo Junction in Kumasi on Friday, 13 February 2026. Despite receiving urgent medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, 18 February 2026.

In a coordinated intelligence-led operation, the Police Intelligence Directorate, working alongside the Anti-Robbery Unit and the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement teams, successfully apprehended four individuals believed to be connected to the crime.

However, on 27 April 2026, unsubstantiated reports began circulating that the suspects had staged a jailbreak and fled detention.

Citing authoritative sources within the police hierarchy, the service has now described those claims as completely false. All four suspects remain securely in custody while judicial proceedings continue, the police assured the public.

No further details on the ongoing investigation or court dates have been released at this time.
