The Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF) has officially opened the door for Ghanaian cycling clubs to compete in three of West Africa’s most prestigious international stage races, marking a major step forward for the sport’s development in the country.
In a communiqué issued to its affiliated clubs, the GCF announced that it is inviting expressions of interest for participation in the Tour du Bénin, the Tour du Togo, and the Tour du Faso—multi-stage road cycling events that draw teams from across the continent.
The initiative underscores the Federation’s commitment to raising the profile of Ghanaian cycling on the African stage. According to the GCF, the move will provide local clubs with a platform to test their competitive mettle and showcase the growing depth of talent within the national cycling fraternity.
Under the outlined coordination framework, clubs wishing to enter must formally submit their applications to the GCF, which will act as the primary liaison with the national cycling federations of Bénin, Togo, and Burkina Faso. The Federation stressed that all participation must be structured, credible, and properly administered.
In addition to club-level entries, the GCF issued specific guidance for individual riders. Any cyclist intending to compete for a team in any of the three tours must first obtain written permission from their registered club, with a copy of that correspondence formally submitted to the Federation.
The measure, according to the GCF, is designed to uphold proper administrative channels and safeguard the interests of both clubs and athletes.
The Tour du Bénin, Tour du Togo, and Tour du Faso are widely regarded as critical springboards for rider development and the broader growth of cycling in the region. Participation in such events offers Ghanaian cyclists rare and valuable exposure to high-level international competition.
The GCF has urged all eligible clubs to treat the announcement with the urgency it deserves and to initiate the formal submission process at the earliest opportunity.
“The Federation remains committed to facilitating smooth and effective representation for all participating entities,” the communiqué read.
Interested clubs are advised to contact the GCF secretariat for further details on application deadlines and registration requirements.
