Effiduase Queen Mother calls for upgrade of Sekyere East District to Municipal status

The Queen Mother of the Effiduase Sub-Traditional Council, Nana Konadu Yiadom I, has appealed to the government to elevate the Sekyere East District Assembly to municipal status, citing historical significance, population growth, and rising development demands.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, to the traditional area, Nana Konadu Yiadom I described Sekyere East as one of the oldest district assemblies in the country, noting its pivotal role in local governance over the years.

She pointed out that the district had been instrumental in the creation of other administrative areas, including the Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly and the Sekyere Afram Plains District Assembly, underscoring its strategic importance within the Ashanti Region.

According to the Queen Mother, steady population increase and rapid growth in socio-economic activities fully justify the need for an upgrade. She explained that municipal status would enhance governance efficiency, improve service delivery, and attract increased government investment in infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

Nana Konadu Yiadom I reaffirmed her commitment to the development of Sekyere East and urged the government to prioritise the district in its decentralisation agenda, stressing that the upgrade would reflect current realities and better position the area to meet the needs of its residents.

In response, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah acknowledged the concerns raised and assured the Queen Mother of the NDC’s commitment to equitable development nationwide. He commended her leadership and noted that traditional authorities remain key partners in national development.

He added that the party would give due consideration to appeals aimed at improving administrative efficiency and accelerating development at the district level.

The call adds to growing advocacy for upgrading districts that have demonstrated significant growth and administrative capacity, as stakeholders continue to push for governance reforms aligned with Ghana’s evolving demographic and economic realities.
