A food supplier who provided ready meals to UK supermarkets has been given a suspended prison sentence after firefighters discovered fish intended for those meals being stored in a bathtub at his north London home.
Stephen Akuoko, originally from Ghana, pleaded guilty to two food safety offences following the discovery at his property.
The case came to light when firefighters attended a fire at Akuoko’s home. During their response, they noticed fish being kept inside a bathroom bathtub and alerted police. Akuoko was subsequently arrested and charged.
Presiding over the case, a judge criticised the meals produced by Akuoko’s operation as unfit for human consumption.
At sentencing, the court handed Akuoko a two-year prison term, suspended, and imposed a five-year prohibition barring him from running any food business.
