Ghanaian gospel singer sparks outrage over ‘offensive’ comments about single mothers

Ghanaian gospel musician Minister Thargh50 is facing a storm of criticism after a video surfaced in which he makes a series of derogatory remarks about single mothers, suggesting they should lower their standards and accept marriage proposals from men with disabilities.

In the widely circulated clip, the young artist, who also goes by the handle @mintharhg50 on social media, launched a broadside against single mothers. He accused them of being unreasonably selective when it comes to choosing partners, despite what he termed as their “baggage.” The musician then escalated his comments, making a deeply offensive suggestion about the kind of men they should be willing to marry.

Instead of pursuing relationships with well-to-do or wealthy men, Minister Thargh50 stated that single mothers should consider proposals from men who are blind or mentally challenged, as, in his words, “that’s their level.”【User Input】

Widespread Backlash

The comments have triggered a firestorm of reactions online, with many social media users expressing disappointment, anger, and outrage. Critics have accused the gospel musician of being insensitive, judgmental, and for promoting a harmful stigma against single mothers, who already face significant societal challenges in Ghana.

The incident has also reignited a broader conversation about the stigmatization of single mothers in Ghanaian society. Single parents often face significant social stigma, including societal judgments and stereotypes that can affect self-esteem and lead to feelings of isolation.

A Pattern of Controversial Statements

This is not the first time Minister Thargh50 has courted controversy. In a TikTok video from 2024, the same individual, then using the handle @mintharhg50, sparked a heated debate after stating that men who can cook do not need to marry. “If I can prepare this food, why should I marry? What do I need marriage for? Any man who can cook does not need to marry. Stay single; don’t go and put any pressure on yourself,” he said in the video.

A Troubling Trend

Minister Thargh50’s comments are the latest in a series of public statements by Ghanaian religious figures that denigrate single mothers. Just last week, Apostle George Newman, another Ghanaian clergyman, sparked a similar debate after a video of him went viral. In a radio interview, Apostle Newman questioned the wisdom of any man who would choose to marry a single mother.

“Unless you’re cursed, I don’t see why you’d go for a single mother,” Apostle Newman stated. “If you are a man and you run into a single mother, watch yourself. They will lie to you and tell you that ‘if you love me, love my child’ but where is the father of the child?” he asked.

Multiple attempts to reach Minister Thargh50 or his representatives for comment on the controversy were unsuccessful as of press time. The viral video continues to circulate widely on social media, with calls for the gospel musician to issue a public apology.
