Over 600 applications flood GFA as search for Black Stars coach intensifies

The Ghana Football Association has received more than 600 applications for the vacant Black Stars head coach position following the dismissal of Otto Addo, GFA President Kurt Okraku has revealed.

The staggering number of applications underscores Ghana’s enduring appeal on the international football stage, according to Okraku, who described the response as a reflection of the country’s standing despite recent setbacks on the pitch.

“We have received over 600 applications for the Black Stars job,” Okraku disclosed, highlighting the intensely competitive nature of the selection process.

The coaching role became vacant after Addo was relieved of his duties following a string of disappointing results, including defeats to Austria and Germany. The decision to part ways with the former coach was reached during a late-night meeting in Stuttgart, marking a decisive shift in the team’s technical direction.

Okraku confirmed that the FA has commenced a rigorous review of applications, with both local and foreign candidates being considered. He emphasised that while the volume of interest is significant, the selection process will prioritise quality, experience, and alignment with Ghana’s long-term football strategy.

“We will have a new coach in a week or two,” Okraku stated during an interview with TV3, indicating that the process has been accelerated to meet critical timelines as the national team prepares for a demanding international schedule.

The urgency is heightened by upcoming high-profile friendlies against Mexico and Wales in May, fixtures that will provide the incoming coach with limited preparation time to assess the squad, implement tactical systems, and rebuild team cohesion.

Attention is also firmly fixed on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Ghana faces a daunting group stage that includes Panama, Croatia, and England. The strength of the opposition has amplified the importance of appointing a technically astute and experienced manager capable of steering the team through a competitive campaign.

The FA leadership has pledged to conduct a transparent and thorough selection process, mindful of growing expectations among supporters and stakeholders eager to see the Black Stars return to their competitive best on the global stage.
