A suspected armed robber is dead following an exchange of gunfire with police officers during an intelligence-led operation on the Atebubu–Ejura Highway in the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred on March 25, 2026, as part of a targeted police response to rising cases of highway robbery along the stretch, which has become a hotspot for criminal activity in recent weeks. According to police sources, several motorists have been attacked and robbed at gunpoint in the area.
Acting on credible intelligence, a team of officers moved in to intercept a suspect believed to be part of a syndicate behind a series of coordinated robberies. When confronted, the suspect reportedly opened fire on the officers, prompting a fierce shootout. The suspect sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations indicate the deceased was a member of a larger robbery gang known to target travelers, particularly during late hours.
