Police shoot, kill suspected armed robber on Atebubu-Ejura highway

A suspected armed robber is dead following an exchange of gunfire with police officers during an intelligence-led operation on the Atebubu–Ejura Highway in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on March 25, 2026, as part of a targeted police response to rising cases of highway robbery along the stretch, which has become a hotspot for criminal activity in recent weeks. According to police sources, several motorists have been attacked and robbed at gunpoint in the area.

Acting on credible intelligence, a team of officers moved in to intercept a suspect believed to be part of a syndicate behind a series of coordinated robberies. When confronted, the suspect reportedly opened fire on the officers, prompting a fierce shootout. The suspect sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate the deceased was a member of a larger robbery gang known to target travelers, particularly during late hours. The group is suspected to be responsible for multiple attacks in which victims were ambushed, assaulted, and robbed of cash, mobile phones, and other valuables.

Police officials say efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other members of the gang who fled the scene. Authorities have also announced increased surveillance and patrols along the highway to reassure commuters and prevent further incidents.

The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order, stating that such operations form part of a broader strategy to dismantle organized crime networks and reduce violent incidents on major roads.

Residents and road users have welcomed the operation, expressing hope that it will deter other criminals. Some commuters have called for a sustained security presence, noting that robberies often occur at night when visibility is low and patrols are less frequent.

Police have urged the public to support ongoing efforts by providing timely and accurate information, assuring that all information shared will be treated with confidentiality.

Investigations are continuing as police maintain heightened alert along the Atebubu–Ejura Highway and other affected routes across the country.
