Black Stars coach Otto Addo takes pride in Antoine Semenyo’s remarkable rise to Manchester City

Ghana national team head coach Otto Addo has spoken candidly about the challenges and satisfaction of nurturing talented players, singling out forward Antoine Semenyo as a prime example of successful development.
In recent comments, Addo revealed the personal investment he and his team have made in Semenyo’s career, admitting that questions about getting the best out of the player sometimes keep him up at night.
“Sometimes I don’t sleep to answer this question [getting the best of Semenyo],” Addo said. “I know there were times there were a lot of people who said he’s not good enough and whatsoever.”
Addo highlighted the pivotal role played by the Ghanaian technical team in Semenyo’s journey, starting from his time at Bristol City. The coaching staff provided guidance and instilled confidence as the attacker made the step up to Bournemouth in the Premier League, before his high-profile move to Manchester City in January 2026.
“We got him when he was at Bristol and we guided him and went to Bournemouth and now he’s at Man City,” Addo continued. “I think we also have our part in developing him and giving him confidence.”
The 26-year-old Ghanaian international completed a £62.5 million (initial fee, with potential add-ons taking it to around £64 million) transfer to the Etihad Stadium earlier this year, signing a deal until 2031. Since arriving, Semenyo has quickly made an impact, contributing goals and assists while helping Manchester City secure the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley.9ec23e
Addo’s remarks come as Semenyo continues to silence early doubters with strong club performances under Pep Guardiola, even as the player remains a key figure for the Black Stars during international duty.
The coach’s reflection underscores a broader narrative in Ghanaian football: the long-term commitment required to unlock potential amid public scrutiny. Many observers had questioned Semenyo’s readiness for top-level football, but his trajectory—from Championship side Bristol City to Premier League regular and now a big-money signing at one of England’s elite clubs—validates the patient approach taken by Addo and his staff.
Semenyo’s success story is being celebrated back home, with fans and pundits noting how his club form contrasts with occasional criticism at the international level. Addo, however, appears focused on the collective effort behind the player’s growth rather than individual credit.
As Ghana prepares for upcoming international fixtures, Addo’s comments serve as both a defence of his methods and a morale boost for the squad, emphasising that talent development is a collaborative journey involving clubs, national teams, and unwavering belief in the player.
Semenyo is expected to feature prominently for the Black Stars, carrying the momentum from his Carabao Cup triumph and growing influence at Manchester City.
