Austria announces social media ban for children Under 14

Austria has become the latest country to move toward restricting social media access for children, with officials announcing a proposed ban for users under the age of 14.

Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler made the announcement, stating that restricting children’s access to online platforms is imperative to protect their well-being.

“Introducing restrictions for children online would help them from becoming addicted and ill,” Babler said, emphasizing that policymakers have a responsibility to regulate digital spaces in a manner similar to how alcohol and tobacco are controlled.

The Vice-Chancellor also noted that other sectors of information provision already operate under clear rules designed to shield young people from harmful content.

An official timeline for the implementation of the proposed ban has not yet been announced.

Austria’s move aligns with a broader European trend toward stricter age regulations for social media platforms. The United Kingdom has launched a consultation on banning social media for children under 16, while Denmark, Greece, Spain, and Ireland are considering similar measures. Spain and Ireland are targeting a ban for under-16s, whereas Denmark and Greece are proposing restrictions for those under 15.
