President Mahama Makes History as First African to Receive Philadelphia’s In Former President John Dramani Mahama has been awarded the International Statesperson Award by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, marking the first time an African leader has received the organization’s highest distinction for global leadership.
The accolade, first established in 1973, is presented to distinguished international figures whose contributions have significantly advanced peace, freedom, and lasting impact on global affairs.
In his acceptance remarks, Mr. Mahama attributed his commitment to global peace and development to the enduring legacy of Africa’s foremost statesmen, citing Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and Kenneth Kaunda as foundational influences on his leadership philosophy.
The award underscores the former Ghanaian president’s decades-long dedication to diplomacy and continental development, placing him among a select group of global leaders recognized by the Council for their contributions to international statesmanship.
