Gov’t to engage Burkina Faso over tomato export ban

The government has announced plans to hold discussions with authorities in Burkina Faso following a directive that suspends the export of fresh tomatoes from the neighbouring country.

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry disclosed in a press release that diplomatic engagements would be pursued to address concerns surrounding the ban, which came into effect on March 16, 2026.

According to the statement, the talks are intended to achieve a mutually beneficial resolution that preserves trade relations between the two West African nations while tackling the issues that necessitated the restriction.

The government emphasised its dedication to settling the matter through dialogue, with the aim of minimising any adverse effects on traders and consumers.

In addition to the diplomatic efforts, the government reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing domestic tomato production. Initiatives such as the “Feed Ghana” and “Feed the Industry” programmes are being implemented to increase local output and guarantee adequate supply for the domestic market.

Authorities have called on traders and stakeholders within the tomato sector to remain calm as diplomatic efforts continue to reach an amicable resolution.
